Sorry if we woke you up, but this is too important. (We’ll be out of here by 8a,m, even though the fight for justice never ends.)
Your neighbor, D-29 Representative Tony Cárdenas, is watching us drown while our planet burns. We are suffering. Our people are dying, our communities are reeling, and our economy is drowning. But rather than invest in our survival, Cárdenas is bought and paid for by the fossil fuel industry which is killing us and our planet. And, despite one of the worst gas leaks in U.S. history being in his neighboring district just a few years ago, he continues to take hundreds of thousands of dollars from PG&E, Edison International, Sempra Energy (the owner of the Aliso Canyon storage facility), and other fossil fuel corporations.
While over 300 people have died of COVID-19 in the district, Cárdenas still doesn’t support Medicare for All, taking $867,000 from Big Pharma. Tens, perhaps hundreds, of thousands of people in this district are unemployed, in large part due to the coronavirus. Over 300 people in the district have died of the virus. Yet, somehow during a global pandemic, when the need for accessible quality healthcare for everyone, not just those lucky enough to be employed or be wealthy enough to afford their own insurance plans or COBRA coverage, is more obvious than ever, Tony continues to listen to his puppet masters in the pharmaceutical and health insurance industries and refuses to support Medicare for All in one of the most Democratic districts in the country.
Our leaders need to be Wide Awake. If Cárdenas won’t step up, we will vote him out and replace him come November. Tony is running for Assistant Speaker of the House, but now is not the time for incrementalism or promises of future change. We need a leader who stands up for us and our futures NOW, before it’s too late. We can’t have leaders like Tony that sit idly by and watch fossil fuel companies destroy our planet while insurance companies profit off of the sick. If Tony won’t step up, we WILL replace him and the rest of his fossil fuel and Big Pharma cronies in our government.
We hope you understand why we had to wake up Rep. Cárdenas.
Our futures are on the line.
